Green Death

These are entries related to or containing references to NyQuil -- what became known to me in my college days as the "Green Death" for the way it tasted and the way it made me feel. I even wrote a song about it.

NyQuil is produced by the Vicks company. It is designed to help relieve many symptoms of the common cold. Because all of the different types medications that make up NyQuil it can have sedating and/or hypnotics side effects. It's usually supposed to be taken at night, just before bedtime -- in college, my friends used it to get drunk. A VERY lousy way to get drunk if you ask me! Booze is cheaper in the long run, just get an older friend to buy you some beer ... seriously!

Humpday Hilarities

January 23, 2008 by Nicki

In my NyQuil-induced stupor, I almost forgot to post this. Today’s funny bit comes from someone y’all may recognize from a recent Geico commercial — Brandon Hardesty. I’ve been a fan of his works for a few years now, and this is one of my favorite videos he’s released on YouTube:

Par for the course

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere about one of Murphy’s Laws being something along the lines of: on your extended holiday weekend, you’ll spend the last day of it sick. I started feeling a little ill last night, sore throat, headache and grogginess mainly. I woke up this morning with my throat feeling like I had just swallowed a cup of shag carpeting and broken glass bits.

Sounds yummy, doesn’t it? Sounds like a job for Green Death! ugh…

So today I’m hoarse and feeling pretty much like death warmed over. Jess and I are sitting here watching Dirty Jobs. I think I’m gonna go lie down in a bit, I feel absolutely horrid.

If anyone sees that Murphy guy, let me know — I’m so gonna kick his ass.

You’re so lucky!

I’ve been out sick since last Thursday. I came home Wednesday night and had been feeling it for most of the day … that familiar tingle in the back of my throat. My tonsils were already swollen and I had a low-grade fever.

Ah, the cold season begins!

So I made a huge pot of soup and made sure there were enough “things that I know I like” to eat. That sounds weird to some people, but I know that when I get sick, I can’t taste worth shit. I’d rather stick to foods that I know for certain that I like — though nowadays I have to stay off spicy foods when sick. (damned stomach turned on me … it’s a conspiracy I tell ya!)

By Thursday morning I was so hoarse that Jessie said I “sound like a frog.” :???: Hrm. Thanks a lot, munchkin.

So anyways … My boss is a really cool guy. We are allowed to work from home when needed, and I did precisely that. Jessie stayed out with me Friday, as she was sitting out a class field trip. (long story, don’t ask)

At one point, she walks up to my desk and peers over my pile of used Kleenex’s, discarded cough drop wrappers, and work-related papers and says to me, “You’re so lucky! You have a whole four day weekend!”

I reminded her that I was working, and this wasn’t exactly a ‘holiday’ for me. She counters with, “Yeah, but you get to spend it at home with me, and we’re going to have so much FUN!”

I said, “I hate to burst your bubble sweetie, but this isn’t exactly fun to me. I hate being sick. I feel awful, I’m miserable, and as soon as your father gets home, I’m going to bed.”

She says, “Yeah, but moms aren’t allowed to get sick; and without you, Daddy and I would starve!”

LOL! Newsflash of the century there. You can’t beat this kid’s logic. She’s a smart cookie … and I’m still hating every damned minute of this stupid freakin’ cold.

On a good note, I seem to be all out of Green Death … hooray for Robitussin.

Oh well. On the upside, I’ve had a good bit of time to update my newest hobby site while waiting on my new laptop to be delivered. I bought a new external harddrive and now have everything backed up to go on the new machine once it’s delivered …

…and God help UPS if they screw this one up!!!!

Almost whole …

I think I’ve just about licked this stupid cold … though I don’t think I’ve had a decent night’s sleep in over a week. I’m still sore and achy from coughing things up, but am otherwise nearly back to my old self.

Someone at work asked me what I did over the weekend. I answered “Layed in bed and prayed for death” … they didn’t find that too funny.

*shrug* :)

I can’t believe it’s the 18th already … things have been so busy, then Jim and I were both sick. Hell, I haven’t even hung the Halloween decorations yet!

I missed Ladies Night Out last week, then we missed Mopo’s wedding — but to be fair, Jim and I didn’t need to be out and infecting others. (as devilishly fun as that might otherwise sound, LOL!) I did get to watch most of the Bama game Saturday, but had no voice, so when I’d yell at the TV it was more of a loud whisper and occaisional squeak!

And REALLY freaked out the cat when I did that! hehehe :)

Work has not let up, and most likely won’t until after Christmas … things aren’t getting much better though. I’ve been told not to put in any more OT … yet I’m quickly falling behind because there’s so much to do, and unfortunately I can’t delegate anything to other people because they’re busy too (or, well, most of them). SO when management comes to me in a few weeks and wants to know why websites are taking so long, I’ll have a good excuse — but in their eyes it’s not an excuse. The PTB seem to think that I have all the time in the world to do both my job and continue to pick up slack for a few others in addition to keeping up the maintenance on existing sites AND do tech support AND continue development on the new system.

*sigh*

Anyways … so yeah, I’m still around — just buried under a pile of work/bullshit and hating life (well, not really, but you get my drift).

Death warmed over

Ugh.

I found a substance more vile than NyQuil. It’s called Zicam — Jim’s mother swears by it, and gave me a small bottle. Jim’s been sick off and on all week and was out sick from work yesterday. I felt it hitting me yesterday afternoon … this morning I feel … blurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. (you get the picture, I won’t gross you with the details)

I tried Zicam first thing in the morning (not smart) and on an empty stomach — I swear I think I lose all cognitive functions when I’m sick! It’s like sick = stupid.

But anyways, I won’t be going to the Ladies Night Out meetup tonight. I don’t want to chance infecting anyone, and I don’t think I should be drinking with all the medication I’m taking (nor should I be driving late at night).

*pout* Damn, I was looking forward to it too. :(

Moporoco’s wedding is tomorrow and I’m hoping that Jim and I will be well enough to go. Oh, speaking of, my brother and his betrothed finally set a date: December 9th. Congrats you guys!

Christmas loot

I’ve been too tired, stressed, whatever lately (and have been fighting off the cold that seems to have caught up with me today) and had been meaning to post my ‘loot list’ that I’ve put off ’til now…

Jessie made out like a bandit this year, LOL. She had pretty much Barbie everything, including an electric guitar, vet/pet shop play set, Dr. Barbie vet doll, Teacher Barbie doll, Barbie’s computer desk playset, and a ton of Barbie-related stocking stuffers and candy. I had also found a set of The Three Stooges cartoons on DVD, and one of those electric swirly thingy lamps in blue (her fav color!).

The topper was the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire game for PC. She’s halfway through the game already.

That’s my girl …

My folks gave her a huge lapdesk easel, a nice art box full of colored pens, pencils, markers, crayons, etc., some sketch pads, and a ton of candy. My grandmother sent her a huge 4 ft teddy bear, and my other grandmother sent her some dolls, a cute tshirt, and some candy.

Jim got sweaters and shirts from pretty much everyone, including me. I also gave him several Dragonball Z collectibles that he’d been drooling over.

He gave me a Harley Quinn Barbie doll that I had been eyeing. (Isn’t she PRECIOUS!?) She’s always been my fav ‘bad guy’. :D

I also got a plush foot massager with teddy bear heads where the feet go, it’s so cute. hehehe

He also gave me a Rainbow Mothra collectible. I want that Burning Godzilla next!!!

Jessie gave me some lavender bath stuff. (my fav!)

My family actually gave me what I asked for this year: gift cards. LOL

Seriously, I asked my mother NOT to buy me any clothing. My brother gave me a really pretty sweater — dark red, another fave. My mom also gave me a really pretty Alabama sweater, which I had been needing, and some crimson Alabama slippers. They’re plush and UBERcomfy.

The biggest gift card I wanted was to Books-a-Million, so guess where I’ll be this weekend … that’s right, getting my geek on. :D

Tonight Jim and I are supposed to go out with some buddies to celebrate his birthday (31st), but I’m not so sure right now I’ll make it. My throat has been killing me since yesterday, and I’ve had that tickley “sick feeling” all morning. I was up with Jessie at 5am, and I’m about to go back to bed … think I’ll take some NyQuil and see if I can sleep some of this crud off.

Movie Reviews (spoiler alert)

April 25, 2005 by Nicki

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, daytime TV sucks ass.

I did get to catch the end of Formula 51, which is a good thing because I really like Samuel L. Jackson, and I was pleasantly surprised to see two British actors I liked in it as well. (and it has Meatloaf … who doesn’t like freakin’ Meatloaf?)

Anyways, I acquired yet another vampire movie over the weekend. I sat down and watched both The Forsaken and Dracula 3000. I slept through The Forsaken when I tried to watch it last week … bad sign. Its premise is that vampirism is caused by a virus — been done before, and by a much better movie. I knew it would be bad when in the first 30 seconds, all you see are blood and boobs. Actually, that sums up the movie really well: blood and boobs. You didn’t miss much. I would expect to see it on Sci-Fi at 2 in the morning anytime soon.

Dracula 3000 was even worse. Pity … it had a couple of actors I really liked in it: Tim Lister and Udo Kier. I think my favorite movie with each would be 5th Element and Shadow of the Vampire, respectively. This movie had a couple of other faces I recognized (I think one was in Baywatch?), but don’t feel arsed to look up at the moment. In fact, let’s put it this way: the movie goes, let’s put Dracula (aka Count Orlock, *rolls eyes* so overdone) in space, being the last of his kind, transported from Planet Translvania to the Carpathian solar system. He bites Coolio first (oh yeah, Coolio’s in it too), then the descendent of Van Helsing *yawn*, and they all die. There’s no boobs in this one, so you’re not missing anything, trust me.

Now, I’m going to look for that bottle of NyQuil and try to find a better way to waste 3 hours while trying to fall asleep.
