Start Page meme
Ok, so it’s not really a meme, but just something I’m curious about and would love some feedback from you lot.
Reminder to LJ’ers: plz reply on my site, or I won’t see your comments. *g*
What do you use as your start page or ‘home page’?
Mine is Firefox AMO: Developer’s Login.
OK, so I’m a little geeky but you all know that about me (or should by now, heh); and besides, that’s where I spend a good deal of my time nowadays. But I have also used my WordPress dashboard as well as my Neopets portal.
I’m curious as to where y’all “start” the proverbial browsing day …

Ok, so I’m just now finally getting around to making a serious post … a bit of catch up for you guys:
My grandfather’s wake and funeral last weekend had a good turn out, I was glad to see so much of the family come together. Heh, I’ve never seen so many red-haired men together in once place. (Daddy’s side is German, mom’s is Irish … go figure …)
I’m feeling a little better this week. I am still a little worried about my dad, but he says that he’s at peace about Pap’s passing. He was there at the hospital with him when he passed on, and he said that he felt really good about it.
Jessie’s school orientation was Tuesday night, so we got to meet her new teacher. She’s an older lady, very nice, and a strict disciplinarian. I really like her, and I think Jessie will like her … she’s just going to have a hard time following directions at first. (which is something she’s had a hard time doing the past year) I think she’ll be good for her. She starts school today, in fact.
I know Jessie has been really excited about starting back to school. She had told me earlier this week that she’s been upset lately because she was lonely and wanted to go back to school so badly so she could see her friends. Poor thing cries when she’s at her mom’s because she doesn’t have anyone to talk to or play with, it breaks my heart.
She has a birthday coming up next week. I had bought her some Neopets stuffed toys and a few accessories for her room, so I know she’ll be excited about that. Plus, I saw something Tuesday night that I really wanted to get for her: an Alabama cheerleader outfit. It was SO PRECIOUS!!! They also had little pink football jerseys with the University of Alabama name and logo on them. *grins* I can’t resist that, and she would love them.
hehe, my dad’s favorite thing to do is to prompt her with “Jessie, what do you think of Auburn?” and of course Jessie replies “Auburn stinks!!!”
LOL, she’s so cute.
Still haven’t heard anything back from BCBS, but I’m still hoping. It would be awesome if I were hired on by them. The benefits alone would make it worth it … but the pay hike definitely helps! hehehe
Things here on the current job are sucking big time. We have a huge company-wide meeting coming up in a couple of weeks, and something tells me that they’ll announce who it is they’ve decided to lay off after that. (All big changes are always announced after these things … I guess they don’t want us pissed off until AFTER all the national reps leave town. *shrug*)
I have a good feeling that neither Jim’s nor my job is in danger, but if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, a friend of mine will be let go. And it’s not just that she’s a friend that pisses me off about it, she’s an extremely hard worker and a very well-organized manager. It’s just that she comes across as abrasive at times. Many of our reps refuse to deal with her because she won’t kiss their ass. Hell, she and I have tangled plenty of times, but I don’t have anything against her for that. She doesn’t put up with bullshit, and if you’re not doing your job she doesn’t have a problem telling you so.
*sigh* There are so many things about this place that bothers me. I’ve seen them screw clients over/out of money. I’ve seen them screw some of the reps over who work for us for commission. And not only money matters, but I worry for security reasons. They aren’t exactly current (read: legal) as far as software licensing goes, and when we have approached the owner, we’ve been put off. I’ve expressed concerns of being audited since I started. If memory serves me, if we’re audited then Jim and I are the ones responsible … never mind the fact that many of the software packages were installed prior to our employment, were lost, left with former employees, or … obtained by “other means” … That worries me … and that’s the biggest reason I’m looking for another job. I don’t plan on being their scapegoat, thank you.
But I digress …
For the time being I’m biding my time and trying to gain all the experience I can so I can move on to better and bigger things.
Somebody please hire me.
??:
Ok, now for something light-hearted. Jessie and I had gone to pick up some take out the other night for dinner; and I don’t remember how we got on the subject, but we did … gross foods. She doesn’t like mayonaise, so she was fussing about how “gross” it was. So I then began to tell her about how when I was in school we would have gross out contests during lunch and that I usually won. She asked what kinds of things I ate, and I listed the ones I could remember — my favorite being chilli and oreos. Yes, together. I tried it as a dare and loved it. LOL, this thoroughly grossed her out so I named another that I thought was “ok” but grossed my friends out: french fries and chocolate ice cream. She says “Now HEY! I like that!! That’s not weird!” LOL, funny how it’s not weird if *she* likes it.
So what “gross” things do you guys like and/or eat?
Surely you must be joking. I never joke, and don’t call me Shirley.
In my Neopets guild, my rank is Jester — an honorary title mostly, I liked it better than the regular Council ones!
And so this month I won the “Member of the Month” award. Part of my prize is to organize a quest for all of the other members.
Seeing as how I’m the guild jester, I thought it fitting that I request they send me their best jokes. Here are two really cute ones I got this week:
Two women went out for ladies night out. They got a little tipsy and decided to walk home for the bar. On the way home they each had to use the bathroom. They were walking by a cemetery and decided to hide behind a grave marker and go. Neither having paper it was decided they would use their underwear and just throw them away. Well the first lady goes and throws hers away. When the other lady goes she has on some expensive underwear and does not care to lose them so she grabs a big ribbon of some flowers on a adjacent grave.
The next day the one husband calls the other and says “I dont think we should have girls night out anymore, my wife came home with no underwear.” Well the other husband says, “Is that all? My wife came home with a note attached to her butt that read ‘FROM ALL OF US AT THE FIRE STATION, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!’”
Q: What has 75 balls and screws old ladies?
A: Bingo
What a day

I swear, Friday couldn’t come soon enough. I’ve spent the better part of this week fighting MS Access databases that don’t want to convert to mySQL. (I suck at doing this by hand … some of that $60 shareware soft is looking better and better now) Until today, I had a working model of a self-maintaining database, but one of the guys in our video/multimedia department threw a proverbial monkey wrench in my works. I had to restructure the whole database and rebuild it (AGAIN!).
Argh … I could just scream … actually, that sounds like a pretty good idea …
At least I did get a slight bit of creativity squeezed out — well, sort of. I created some plushie images for my Neopets gallery.
Well, there was one good thing about today: I got to see the sun for the first time in what seems like forever. It has been raining for over two weeks. Winter sucks. I’m ready for summer already. Give me unrelenting heat and humidity anyday, this cold stuff has *got* to go!
Oh my how the days fly by!

I looked at my calendar and suddenly it’s March 23rd! I had been meaning to post sooner, but Life got in the way … you know how it is …
I had thought my video card was crapping out on me, it turned out to be my monitor. I’m partly relieved, but partly upset because this thing was only a few months out of warranty!
Oh well, this gives me the excuse I needed to start saving up for an LCD … which is what I’ve been wanting for a while anyways!
I’m looking at replacing my case in the new few weeks. I finally ran across an aluminum/window case that I actually like! It’ll look great with all my green lights and fans.
Work has been mega busy … but I’m starting to think that maybe I need to find another job. There have been several legal-related issues that are bothering me lately. One of which is their refusal to pay me proper OT pay for my time spent working from home at night and on the weekends. Their current stance is that any time over 40 hours earned on company property is considered Over Time, but otherwise I’d get regular pay.
I know this is against the law, and that I have rights … BUT I also get to leave early on Fridays a lot. The last time I brought this up, it was suggested that I started staying late on Fridays.
Anyways, the amount I’m not getting paid isn’t really enough to bitch about, but lately it’s been several things hitting me all at once. Without going into too much detail, let me just say that there have been practices I’ve observed there that make me question their business ethics. Call me what you will, but I don’t like working for “questionable” businesses.
It seems the more I get to know the business owners, the less I like them. Oh well, it’s a job, and I have bills and a family … and a case to buy. (heh)
On a lighter note, I’ve found a new addiction … Neopets. Go ahead, laugh … it’s ok. A friend of mine finally talked me into signing up. I did it thinking I could sign up, and give the account to Jessie because it looks like something for kiddies. I have to admit I’m a bit impressed. Their whole site and system integrated … even their little flash games interact with the site. Someone obviously put a lot of hard work into this thing.
And my pet is so cute.

This is Naiasys, my pet Eyrie. He’s basically a griffin. I feed, house, play with, shop for, groom, and train him.
I’m a sucker for “cute” … (shut up, Matt! ;P) … I felt pretty proud of myself on the name. I wanted something that sounded Egyptian, so I threw together a few syllables: N’eye-uh-sis.
Anyways, other news: both the UAB and UA men’s basketball teams made it to Sweet 16, so I’m thrilled!
ROLL TIDE!!!!!! (and go blazers!
)
