Week/Weekend Agenda

I’m going out of town tomorrow for a M$ tech conference. Friday we are celebrating Jessie’s and Jim’s mom’s birthdays — his mom’s was the 2nd (she was out of town at the time) and Jessie’s is today’s, but we won’t get her until late tomorrow night. Saturday is a LAN party at Moporoco’s, but I don’t know yet if I’m going. We’ve got a lot of shite going on at work, so it will depend on how I feel this weekend.
Anyways, I’ll be out of pocket for the next few days. If anyone NEEDS to reach me, hit up my Google Mail account and I’ll get back to you when I have internet access.

From Nicki, Jim, and Jessie:
Have a HAPPY and SAFE July 4th, everyone!

Keep in mind those that gave us the freedoms that we celebrate not just today, but every day. And remember those that are still fighting for our freedoms far from home.

As much as I hate country music, I love the patriotic spirit of most country artists. And I cannot help but LOVE this song:
To anyone researching, Beth’s post has some excellent links with historical treasures.
I smurfed this gem from Michelle Malkin. I used to love seeing these on Saturday mornings!
I’ll most likely be spending part of today trying to catch up on work that piled up while I was out with Jim. He and I went in to work yesterday (on our off day even! heh) and I’ve gotten a lot done, but still have about 2 weeks’ worth of new client websites left to build. *yech*
Oh well, at least it will be nice to have the OT.
It’s a jungle out there …

I ran across an interesting article yesterday and it struck me as funny, in a thought-provoking kind of way:
From Fortune Magazine, via Yahoo News:
Calls of the wild
Thursday June 8, 10:54 am ET
By Tim Carvell, FORTUNE MagazineWhen you’ve phoned in sick, have any of your co-workers ever been thoughtful enough to come over and regurgitate blood into your mouth? If not, then your team doesn’t have anything on vampire bats, who’ll routinely do just that for their ill comrades. It’s one of many behaviors found in the wild that suggest that humans aren’t the only creatures that know how to cooperate. And animals do it without the benefit of management consultants.
And it’s probably a lot cheaper that way too!
Seriously, growing up I would learn about only a handful of animals that would tend to their sick and/or elderly the way that we humans do. How funny that now scientists are learning that “they” and “we” aren’t quite so different anymore.

Biologist Lee Dugatkin of the University of Louisville has written about animal cooperation in the delightfully titled book, Cheating Monkeys and Citizen Bees. He argues that critters act according to a rudimentary cost-benefit analysis: They cooperate when doing so gets them something more than they could get on their own.
My cat is proof of that. LOL!
“I don’t want to be petted now. Stay away from me.” — an hour later — “I’m hungry and I can’t get into the pantry, I need you now! Please feed me. See? I’m cute!! *purrrrrrrr*”
So lionesses will band together to hunt large prey, like gazelles or giraffes, that they cannot catch on their own, but they’ll split off to hunt, say, warthogs, individually.
When animals do choose to cooperate, biologists have found something intriguing, and a bit depressing. In the wild, as in the office park, freeloading is rife, such as the ring-tailed lemur that can’t be bothered to help protect its territory. So, many species have developed systems to keep freeloading to a minimum. When impalas, for example, groom one another’s necks for ticks, they take turns. The monkeys of the Tai forest in West Africa have a different anti-slacker technique. Researcher Christophe Boesch found that when they hunt a tiny colobus monkey for dinner, they divide the spoils according to how much work each chimp did.
I can remember when pay-scales used to be that way … talk about depressing! ;P
In other words, they work on commission. What links the impalas to the chimps – and all animals that want to prevent freeloading – is that they are able to remember who did what. Call it the oversight committee.
But for all the teamwork that goes on in nature, the animal world tends to be governed by an old-fashioned command-and-control structure. Suzanne MacDonald, a professor of psychology at York University in Toronto who volunteers as an animal behaviorist at the Toronto Zoo, describes the social structure among baboons: “If you’re on the bottom rung of the dominance ladder,” she says, “it pays to be submissive and, frankly, a bit sycophantic, because you’re more likely to earn the favor of those higher up the ladder. Eventually this pays off, and you can move up the ladder yourself and gain access to big perks like mating opportunities or first crack at dinner.” Sound familiar? As MacDonald notes, “Throw in a really cool car, and that sounds a lot like an executive bonus system.”
Take a wild hairy guess which system applies to my workplace.
I love the sauce

Hot sauce that is, hehe.
I hate dayjobs. If I could work for a place doing what I’m doing now, but only at night, that would rock. Oh well, at least I can sleep somewhat decent hours on holiday/extended weekends.
I got up at dawn to see Jessie off when her mom dropped by the house. I thought about going back to bed, but decided to play Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines for a couple of hours. (perfect game time is when the house is quiet) A new patch came out last week, so I’d been wanting to get in another game anyways. I’ve played about half of the clans already.
This week I’m a Ventrue.
Played until about 8:30 and went back to bed. Got up around 5, showered, and went by Zaxby’s for a quick lunch/dinner. (Yum, I love their hot sauces!!!)
Yesterday Jim and I left work early and caught X-Men 3: The Last Stand. OMG, what a TEAR-JERKER!!!! I won’t say that the movie was bad, per se` … but it definitely wasn’t what I expected. I won’t spoil it, but it wasn’t the shiny happy ending I was looking for. However, it DID leave an opening for another sequel, but I seriously doubt it will happen. The only concern I have now is that reactions to this movie may affect the Wolverine movie if/when it comes out.
Oh well … que` sera, sera.
I saw the previews for the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest due out soon. I also saw a teaser for the new Nicolas Cage movie … Ghost Rider. OMG, it looks SECK-SEE as HELL!!
Also saw the previews to The Omen remake … I’ve no interest in seeing that one. The first one was bad enough, thank you. And I’ve too many demons of my own, I don’t want to watch anyone else’s.
I was reading online last night that there’s going to be another Hellboy movie (Hellboy 2: The Golden Army). Sweeet!!! There’s also going to be another Pumpkinhead movie, so I’m looking forward to that too!
Yay.
Lordi, Lordi, What’s going on?

I swear, everytime I sit down to blog, I’m interrupted.
Oh well, I’ll live. I had actually wanted to sit and rant about a few things last weekend, but have since cooled off, and I’m in too good of a mood today to ruin it.
After a lot of study and consideration, I reopened the coven site last week. But it will pretty much serve as an online archive from now on. I simply don’t have the time or resources to do more with it now, but that’s all good I think.
I’ve been amusing myself during my lunch breaks by watching various videos from Google Video on my Google page. I ran across one, it was by the Finnish winners of the Eurovision song contest, Lordi, called ‘Hard rock hallelujah‘. I had heard this song on Hard Radio the other night and it was buggin’ me because I couldn’t remember the artist’s name. This *so* reminds me of the stuff I used to listen to in high school and college, and they look like a cross between GWAR and Rob Zombie. In fact, the lead singer reminds me (in the video anyways) of Big Jim of Obliviaxe. *grins*
Anyways, I’ve been diggin’ on that a lot lately. Not much else is happening, but I may post more personal things later.
