Lesson Learned

May 14, 2008 by

Ever have one of those moments where you realized you had just done something really stupid?

Yeah, I had one of those moments last night. I was up late playing around on my laptop with a SharePoint template and for whatever reason, I decided that it would be a good idea to play around with the MS themes which control the look of the backend (admin) stuff. Really stupid. It overwrote a few things in my template.

Even worse: my backup was a tad bit older than I originally thought. Colossally stupid.

So I am spending today trying to clean up my mess. I knew better than NOT to check my backups before screwing with templates and themes in ANY system, much less SharePoint.

*sigh* Lesson learned.

Well, the doctor’s visit went better than I expected … granted I hate going to the doctor, so I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs!

:P

The doc said that the wound looked clean, with no sign of infection, so that was good. She told me that I had done a good job keeping it cleaned and bandaged, but it would have been better if I had gone to the emergency room the night it happened to get stitched up.

Perhaps … but too late to do anything about that now. :???:

I told her about the pain and numbness and she said that even though it wasn’t deep enough to hit the bone, I may have some subcuteal (sp?) nerve damage. She said it may or may not grow back, just that time would tell. She also said that the swelling could be what’s causing the numbness too. She suggested I keep my hand raised upward when not using it and to take it easy for a bit.

Though I can’t “take it easy”, the swelling has gone down enough now that I can somewhat use my hand, and even (almost) close my hand into a fist. It still hurts like all bloody (insert favorite expletive) when something/I/someone touches the wound, even through the bandage.

The part I hated about the visit though: I had to get a tetanus shot … it burned like Hell, and today my shoulder is really sore. Oh well, it’s over and hopefully I’ll have my left hand back.

Oh, in case you guys haven’t noticed, I added something festive for St. Patty’s. :D

I’m using Andy Beard’s Snowfall plugin for WordPress.

Cute, don’tcha think?

Ok, that was incredibly stupid

March 12, 2006 by

That’s exactly what I was saying to myself last night. I was having a good day overall, Jim had gone golfing with some friends, I had gotten some work around the house done, Jessie had spent the day with her mother so the house was quiet and I had it to myself. Then I started making dinner … Chinese chicken pot stickers and fried spicy sausage. But the sausage links were a big frozen wad and I needed to get some separated for cooking. I decided that it would be quicker to separate them myself with a knife rather than nuking them in the microwave and waiting until they came apart on their own. I should’ve paid closer attention to the knife, but I was hurrying myself and I tend to screw up more when hurried.

Anyways, I had applied a little too much pressure and the knife slipped completely through the sausages and the bag holding them and directly into my hand. Into my middle finger on my left hand, to be exact. As soon as I saw it, I thought to myself “Ok, that was incredibly stupid” … but what I actually said was “Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Ow ow ow ow ow!!”

Blood doesn’t freak me out unless it’s my own, and it’s gushing from my body. For half a second, I was afraid I had severed my finger because the wound goes literally around my finger and on the deepest part of the wound the skin is shredded — I was using a serrated knife. So my finger’s been mangled and hurts like all unHoly (insert favorite expletive).

What got me was that I had to wait until Jim got home to help me seal the wound. What’s worse is that it took over 20 minutes to get it to stop bleeding long enough to get the liquid bandage to dry/seal itself. So I’m pacing around the kitchen holding my hand in a wad of paper towels, crying and moaning. It’s still swollen today, but doesn’t hurt unless I try to bend the finger, turn an object with my hand, or actually do anything with my hand.

Owie.

Both Jessie and Jim have been real troopers at helping me with whatever I need. Jessie had to help me put my hair up this morning because I can’t grasp anything yet with my left hand. Jim being the sharp witted monkey that he is, has made clutsy and knife jokes all day. It’s all good though. He even cooked the dinner I had started preparing last night.

What a dear. :)

So I’ve discovered that typing one-handed is a real BITCH! LOL Oh well, I don’t want to push it anyways … I tore open the wound this morning trying to turn a doorknob, so unless I can get it to stay closed, I’ll need to go have it stitched.

Which, looking at the cut/mangling now, might not be a bad idea … it looks like something has been chewing on my hand.

:P

I did get a bit of good news today, my long time friend Matthew called to tell me that he and his fiancee Kelly have set a wedding date and to invite us to their wedding. YAY! :) Congrats you guys!

So, anyone do anything exciting this weekend?
