What’s off the wall?
Jessie came up to me and asked what “off the wall meant” … I asked her if she knew what random meant. She says, “Yeah, that’s like when it’s anything or could be anything in the whole world — like on my Bop-It game!” (I love her definitions, lol)
I said, “Anything ‘off the wall’ means something odd or different, even random, in a collection that doesn’t seem like it belongs or matches the rest. Or it could be something that just seems to come out of nowhere.”
She ponders for a minute and says, “Ok say something ‘off the wall’ to me!”
I looked at her and said, “I wonder what it’d be like to drive a tank.”
“Huh!?”
I grinned and said, “I wonder if presentation folder printing is cheap?”
I’m greeted with another “WTF is she talking about?” look and I laughed. At this point Jessie says, “That’s not making any sense!”
“Exactly, which is why those were ‘off the wall’.”
I could see the light bulb flicker on. “Ooooooooooh! That’s just weird. *pauses thoughtfully* Can I watch a movie?”
Upgraded to WP 2.1
January 28, 2007 by Nicki
Ok, the upgrade is *finally* done … for this blog, LOL. It took me about 2-2 1/2 hours to upgrade this beast. Of course, this included cleaning out my databases, deleting old files no longer in use, etc. I updated all of my plugins — or rather, TRIED. A couple have been discontinued (much to my dismay), a couple didn’t work after upgrading, one is listed as being updated, but when I downloaded the zip is empty.
THEN there is my site unavailable plugin which refuses to work with 2.1 (despite the author saying that it works with 2.x systems and 2.1/mu).
ARGH! I think I haven’t had an upgrade this extensive since I upgraded to WP 1.2 “way back when” …
Oh well, at least it’s done … or done enough for now. I still have a few plugins that I need to replace, but at least 99% of everything is up and running. I still need to re-organize my links — in fact, I’ll probably re-code all of that (I’m using a template for that page).
Of course, I still have my recipes site to do as well as several hobby sites … *groan*
I can’t imagine how people that have 50-60 WP installs do this …
Why do we have so much stuff?
January 25, 2007 by Nicki
This week I’ve been trying to make my lunch hours “productive” by cleaning out several boxes that moved in with Jim — 4 years ago next month! LOL I kept saying to myself, “Why do we have so much stuff?”
Old boxes full of “all in one” motherboards with Duron processors, video cards made by companies long since gone the way of the dinosaur (remember Voodoo anyone?), all kinds of cabling supplies — this is all his crap btw, lol. I’ve already cleaned out my crap. hehehe I’ve filled several garbage bags full of clothing to go to Hannah Home tomorrow, as well as kitchen stuff that we don’t need or use. Most of the clothing is mine and Jessie’s — although Jessie delighted in unpacking the bags of mine when she discovered that she could wear some of the old tops that I had from high school. She says to me, “Hey, these are almost my size — *gasp* you were so tiny! That’s so CUTE!”
heh, yeah, I was a skinny minnie … wish I could say the same now … of course back then I had a figure (or rather, lack thereof!) that Olive Oyl would envy, LOL. But anyways …
For a long time I was a makeup-hoarder … I’d buy pretty/shiny stuff, but never use it. I swear, I had a HUGE box full of it — mostly unopened! So it’s going to Hannah Home too.
I even have a couple makeup mirrors that I received for Christmas a few years ago, but never opened, much less used — those are definitely going … I need the room!
I cleaned out a LOT of my old goth and clubbing clothes, lots of rosaries and crosses I had bought online and other related paraphernalia, several evening gowns, LOTS of shoes, lol … I can remember looking at each item and was amazed how with almost everything, there was a particular memory attached to it – a place, a song, or someone …
All the more reason to get rid of most of it, I guess. Most of the goth stuff reminds me of Fsckhead anyway.
But enough of that…
The job is going pretty well, but keeps me mega busy. (which is a good thing, lol) Also, I am *so* looking forward to this weekend. My Ladies Night Out group has a meetup this weekend and we’re having potluck dinner at the group leader’s house. I’m thinking of making some of my yummy Taco Soup.
I may upgrade my WordPress installs Sunday, but then again I may just decide to chill out … after all, I’ve worked and cleaned all week, when does a girl get a day off?
WordPress 2.1 “Ella” released
January 23, 2007 by Nicki
(x-posted to BYKYC)
WordPress 2.1 “Ella” (named for jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald) is now available on the WordPress website. Here’s a sampling of what’s in the new version:
- Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again.
- New tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post.
- The lossless XML import and export makes it easy for you to move your content between WordPress blogs.
- Our completely redone visual editor also now includes spell checking.
- New search engine privacy option allows you take you to indicate your blog shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines like Google.
- You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.
- Much more efficient database code, faster than previous versions. Domas Mituzas from MySQL went over all our queries with a fine-toothed comb.
- Links in your blogroll now support sub-categories and you can add categories on the fly.
- Redesigned login screen from the Shuttle project.
- More AJAX to make custom fields, moderation, deletions, and more all faster. My favorite is the comments page, which new lets you approve or unapprove things instantly.
- Pages can now be drafts, or private.
- Admin has been refreshed to load faster and be more visually consistent.
- The dashboard now instantly and brings RSS feeds asynchronously in the background.
- Comment feeds now include all the comments, not just the last 10.
- Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages.
- The upload manager lets you easily manage all your uploads pictures, video, and audio.
- A new version of the Akismet plugin is bundled.
The press release also says there are easter eggs hidden throughout the program, so that’ll be interesting.
Developer Features
Developers will like the cleaner code in this release (much better than 2.0!). It includes hundreds of enhancements that will enable a new generation of richer plugins. A few of the things included:
- Pseudo-cron functionality lets you schedule events much like cron.
- Users admin can now comfortably handle hundreds of thousands of users.
- The new WP_Error class cleans up how we do error reporting and handling.
- The javascript loader makes it easier for plugins to include rich functionality.
- Tons of new hooks and APIs.
- Code inline documentation has been filled out.
- Image and thumbnail API allows for richer media plugins.
- Custom header, color picker, and image cropping framework.
Also noteworthy: 2.1 also includes over 550 bug fixes.
Future Releases
The WordPress team has set up a “hot-or-not” style feature board where you can vote on ideas for the next release of WordPress.
Nice job, guys!
I dream the strangest things sometimes…

I’ve been dreaming about Hobie a lot lately. I guess it’s only natural, I dreamed about my grandfather for a long time following his death. I dreamed about her last night, except this time she appeared as she did back in her prime — “fat and purdy” as Papa Buddy used to say. I dreamed I had gone camping with my mother and brother and for whatever reason, Hobie had to stay in the car.
(weird … as 1. Mom doesn’t “camp” and 2. I would have never EVER left one of my animals in a vehicle)
The night before last, I dreamed Hobie was dying all over again, and I was trying to save her. I don’t remember the results of my efforts, but I guess they couldn’t have been too far from the “real world” results. In my dream I also relived the conversation I had with my mother the morning following her death. Mom was comforting and consoling, reminding me that Hobie was very old for a cat and considering all things, had a very good life including being in good health with the exception of the last few months of her life. All cats should be so lucky.
I know it’s selfish, but I couldn’t help but want to hang on to her longer. “It’s only natural,” I remember explaining to Jessie, “to want to hang on to a loved one and wish that they could stay with you forever, but this is a part of the great circle of life and is the inevitable and inescapable fate of all living things.”
Thinking back, I think I was trying to more convince myself of that, than her.
Luckily my boss was nice enough to let me have that Monday off. I had originally planned to put her down that day, but Hobie passed away late the night before, so I spent the morning burying her — and for the rest of the day, letting myself fall apart. I’ve never handled the death of a loved one well, but I’d like to think I’m getting better at it … if that’s something to be proud of at all.
Hopefully soon I can go back to my “normal” dreams about tornadoes and whatever tv show/movie I had watched the night before.
This so reminds me of Jim…

We’re so tiny!
January 16, 2007 by Nicki
Smurfed from Futility Closet: we’re nothing more than a speck of blue dust in this cosmic playground … how many of you wonder “Are there other beings out there? What are they wondering when looking at our neck of the galaxy, as a small dot in their night sky?”

Earth seen from 4 billion miles away, photographed by Voyager 1 on June 6, 1990.
Of the “pale blue dot,” astronomer Carl Sagan said, “That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ’superstar,’ every ’supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
