Phasing out email for this domain

November 29, 2006 by

Due to the amount of spam my email accounts are receiving, and the fact that for whatever reason now The Bat! refuses to filter incoming emails, I’m thinking of turning off email for this domain (nitallica.org) and simply using my GMail account instead. I’m sure most of you are smart enough to figure out the address (nitallica plus gmail dot com equals … very good :))

If in doubt, simply use the Contact form here on this site and you’ll reach me.

Doesn’t you host run spam filters?

Yes, but I’m getting a ton of bounce back spam (or, more commonly known as “backscatter“).

Despite my host’s anti-spam measures and my own personal, I’m still getting around 300 a day that are getting through, so I’m setting up a limited set of “good” addresses for handling various host and domain functions and all personal mail will go to my GMail. :)

I figured that out a few months ago myself. I’ve found that it’s just a lot easier to let gmail to their thing rather than fighting with the filters at whatever webhost I’m using. I’m not an LP customer any more (their service has gone in the tank this year), and I didn’t want to take the time to learn a whole new system.

Ow. I wasn’t aware that you left LP. :( I’m sorry to hear that.

If my usage spikes again, I may have to. I’ve been dumbing down my blog installs and have pretty much kept things even, but I had a comment spam attack a while back that had me suspended. :(

My fiance hosts his own stuff, and that is looking tempting, but I’m not fond of Windows hosting. :P On the other hand, it would be nice not to pay for extra domains, and if it goes down, I know exactly where to find him! ;)

Akismet is a pretty decent WP plugin to handle comment spam (assuming you’re not already using it that is)

Are you a moderator at LP? I’ve had really good luck in the forums with the paid moderators. Randy especially has helped me on some issues. It’s been the online and telephone support that seems to be so sluggish lately, maybe in the last year or so. The quality has been good, but the response times have not been. When it came time to renew, I went ahead with another host that somewhat less expensive. Maybe a good decision, maybe no, but so far it’s been working ok.

Doc, yeah, blocked over 8K spams with it so far. :)

Rick, nah … am definitely not around there enough. :P

A LOT of people complain about response times, and I agree with ya there, they suck dead donkey balls. :( LP is my 4th paid host and will most probably be my last … if/when the opportunity presents itself, I’ll move my setup internal and run/host it myself.

I’ve actually started to just forward all my mail to gmail. It catches all of the spam, so no more dealing with it for me. I just set my host to clear it off after 7 days.

    Good Times.

Then just set the account up as an additional reply account in gmail so you can send mail from it.
