Rick: I agree. I grew up in a turbulent household -- growing up school was my refuge. :(

I know it's NOT as bad as my rant makes it sound, but it is one of the things that worries me about society today. I've noticed a LOT of things changing over the last few years and the changes in schools today worries me. Like I've said before, we are lucky that Jessie goes to a very good school.

Ben: LOL! Your poor mum would fall over from shock if she saw what you do online, you naughty boi. ;)

(And don't take the mickey outta my name ;P~~~~!! hehehe)

That is a really good article. We tend not to have such school based violence over here, but being that gun crime is on the increase among young teens and early twenties surely it's only a matter of time. Oh and my mum doesn't supervise me on the net. And i'm probably in need of supervision more than Jessie, I end up chattin to wierd characters who's nicknames are based on Rock bands :p

Here are some comments from a father and a guy who's been in the school trenches for the better part of 17 years.

To read the news and listen to the commentaries, yes, schools sound like a really scary place. And since 1998 or so, school violence has been slowly but steadily moving from the inner cities to the suburbs and beyond. I'm a parent and an educator, and these are disturbing times.

It's also important to separate the media hype from reality, though. Schools are not the most dangerous places in society, though. In fact, they're not even near the top of the list. Your own home is actually much, much more dangerous statistically than your local elementary, middle, or high school. In my 17 years in the business, I can honestly say I've never been assaulted at school. I have been, though, assaulted in my own home, and it's no fun.

Having said all of that, I will also say that even one tragedy per year is one too many. Schools are working hard with prevention and intervention strategies. We're making a historically safe place even more secure.
