Better living through chemistry

April 29, 2005 by Nicki

Ok, now that I have a halfway clear head and somewhat sound mind I can post. LOL

I had to take a couple more sick days off from work this week due to my cold. Wednesday night I started vomiting blood and was having chest pains, so I saw my doctor. What started out as a slight case of flu progressed into a sinus infection, and he thinks I might have a bronchial infection too. So now I’m on stronger meds and more antibiotics. (Yuk!)

But at least today I feel soooooooo much better because I had more than 3 hours of sleep, and my head is less ‘fuzzy’. :D

I’m taking off this afternoon for some R&R, but I brought some work home with me … geeesh, I’m over a week behind at work! Oh well, job security I guess.

Jim bought the unrated Blade: Trinity DVD. I watched it yesterday, and was disappointed. (I’ll post a proper review when I get some time)

I’m also thinking of getting a membership with the gym at the local community center. The weather’s getting warmer, and I’m more out of shape than I’d like. It would be nice to have place where I can go workout, and not worry about leaving Jessie at home. (they have a children’s center where she would be supervised, plus chances are there would be kids there from the area and/or her school)

I had a minor meltdown earlier in the week … my dishwasher decided to eat itself Tuesday. I had a fit and threw a few dishes. After being sick for a week, and feeling like crap in general I just wanted *something* to work right! LOL. Plus, I noticed yesterday that it’s leaking, so I’m sure when I get home there will be water all over the kitchen floor … we’re going to have to get that looked at. *sigh* If it’s not one thing, it’s another. :P

Oh well. Almost time to clock out of here. I’m going to take it easy today.

Movie Reviews (spoiler alert)

April 25, 2005 by Nicki

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, daytime TV sucks ass.

I did get to catch the end of Formula 51, which is a good thing because I really like Samuel L. Jackson, and I was pleasantly surprised to see two British actors I liked in it as well. (and it has Meatloaf … who doesn’t like freakin’ Meatloaf?)

Anyways, I acquired yet another vampire movie over the weekend. I sat down and watched both The Forsaken and Dracula 3000. I slept through The Forsaken when I tried to watch it last week … bad sign. Its premise is that vampirism is caused by a virus — been done before, and by a much better movie. I knew it would be bad when in the first 30 seconds, all you see are blood and boobs. Actually, that sums up the movie really well: blood and boobs. You didn’t miss much. I would expect to see it on Sci-Fi at 2 in the morning anytime soon.

Dracula 3000 was even worse. Pity … it had a couple of actors I really liked in it: Tim Lister and Udo Kier. I think my favorite movie with each would be 5th Element and Shadow of the Vampire, respectively. This movie had a couple of other faces I recognized (I think one was in Baywatch?), but don’t feel arsed to look up at the moment. In fact, let’s put it this way: the movie goes, let’s put Dracula (aka Count Orlock, *rolls eyes* so overdone) in space, being the last of his kind, transported from Planet Translvania to the Carpathian solar system. He bites Coolio first (oh yeah, Coolio’s in it too), then the descendent of Van Helsing *yawn*, and they all die. There’s no boobs in this one, so you’re not missing anything, trust me.

Now, I’m going to look for that bottle of NyQuil and try to find a better way to waste 3 hours while trying to fall asleep.

Ugh.

Quick update: Jim’s mom made it through the surgery OK. She’s bruised and her face is swollen something horrible. Poor thing looks like someone beat her up. Her jaws are wired shut, so she’s on a liquid diet for about 10 weeks. She came home Saturday afternoon, and will stay home for most of the time she’s ‘out’.

I’m still sick, and in fact going to miss another day of work. I’m exhausted because I haven’t had a good night’s sleep since I got this stupid cold. Jim’s still irritable because he’s not completely over his either … and he’s not happy about me staying home. He has to take my support calls when I’m not there. :(

I’ll make it up to him. In the meantime, I’m gonna finish reading the job ads and news, then go back to bed. If I could sleep through an entire hour without coughing something up, it will be a miracle.

How cute! I ran across these Unreal Tournament 2004 KaosAni’s. :D

Love ain’t perfect.

April 21, 2005 by Nicki

I normally don’t do “chick flicks”. Hell, I usually hate any movie that makes me go running for a box of Kleenex and a bowl of rocky road. But there is one movie that I’ve been particularly fond of … it’s one of the DVDs Jim got me for my birthday: Moonstruck, with Nicholas Cage and Cher. I love this movie, I think it’s funny and kind of sweet. (and probably because Cage’s character reminds me of someone)

My favorite scene is where Cage is trying to convince Cher that he’s the right guy for her, ironic in the sense that he’s describing love in a negative light (rather than the old “Love is wonderful” dime store routine):

“Love doesn’t make things nice, it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. We’re here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts, and to love the wrong people, and die.”

To those first three sentences, I say “Amen!” … love does make everything a mess. But without that mess, wouldn’t one feel incomplete?

I would.

By the Grace of God and modern chemistry …

April 21, 2005 by Nicki

Ugh. I feel like warm recycled dung.

I stayed home from work yesterday, was way too weak to go. I swear, Tuesday night hit me like a bright pink Pepto-induced concrete wall. (I never knew vomit came in Technicolor?!)

Whatever Jim had, and apparently still has, I now have. Oh the freakin’ JOY. (I wanna go back to bed :() Oh well, I’ll live.

The funny thing is, in my fever-induced stupor Tuesday night and early hours of yesterday morning, the bright idea hit me to write down whatever I was thinking. Unfortunately now I can’t remember any of it, nor can I read my own freaking handwriting! (If my head didn’t already hurt so damned much I’d knocked on my desk a few times.)

Oh well, at least tomorrow is Friday, so I can leave work early without too much grief. Someone was giving me a hard time this morning about being out, so I threatened to lick the coffee pots so I could “share” my sickness with everyone.

Edit: I set my mood thingy at ’sleepy’ because I don’t have one for ’sick’ :P

Acapella Nintendo

April 19, 2005 by Nicki

I blatantly swiped this from Michael’s blog. How could I resist?!? So cute, yet so geeky: University of Wisconsin acapella group Redefined singing Nintendo theme songs.

That’s a keeper!

Ugh…

I’ve felt horrible all day. My throat is starting to hurt, my sinuses fell like they’re full of jell-o, and my head is aching. Jim’s been sick for the last week (and still is!), and I think I’ve finally caught whatever it is he has. I feel like my brain is going to ooze out of my ears if I lay down …. mmmmmmmmm oozey brains

Jim’s ex has Jessie for the next couple of nights, so I think tonight will be “pot luck” and I’ll turn in early tonight. I had planned on posting my review of “The Forsaken” (vampire flick, surprise surprise!), but I’ll save that for another time.

Before I forget …

I had meant to post yesterday, but couldn’t be arsed so pthbbbbt!

We had dinner with my parents Saturday night. I got a nice shirt and shorts and a little ca$h. (YAY!)

Mr Politics (my brother *g*) was also there. He gave me a gift card to Proffits. (haha, I always thought that name was appropriate considering some of their pricing!)

YAY! Now I have an excuse to go shopping! :D

I spent most of yesterday being lazy. I cleaned out the kitchen cabinets. Jessie complained of being “bored” so I put her to work matching all of the tupperware bowls and lids together. LOL, there was plastic ALL over the kitchen!

She was more than happy to go join Daddy in the den after that, hehehe.

Jim’s been sick over the past week, and he had a rough couple of days this weekend. I think we’re going to hi-tail it out of here early today and head over to pick Jessie up.

Maybe we can even make it home before 6 this time … I’m starving!

Oh how bloody lovely …

Adobe announced today the purchase of Macromedia for 3.4 billion dollars.

Great … one more software package that I won’t be able to afford because a larger software bought them out.
